- Has a brown to white body with dark brown to black bars;
- Has two large projectable spines on either side of the head, activated when disturbed;
- It’s first dorsal fin has 16 strong, painfully stinging spines;
- Lives in estuaries and bays to a depth of 30 m;
- Is endemic to Australia;
- Often seen in groups on the ocean floor, resting on the sandy surface; and
- Is sometimes camouflaged with the sandy bottom.
