Fast Facts: Fortescue

  • Has a brown to white body with dark brown to black bars;
  • Has two large projectable spines on either side of the head, activated when disturbed;
  • It’s first dorsal fin has 16 strong, painfully stinging spines;
  • Lives in estuaries and bays to a depth of 30 m;
  • Is endemic to Australia;
  • Often seen in groups on the ocean floor, resting on the sandy surface; and
  • Is sometimes camouflaged with the sandy bottom.
